Professor Susan Thorp

Head of the Department of Banking and Finance, Monash University

Professor Susan Thorp has recently joined Monash University, as Head of the Department of Banking and Finance. Prior to her appointment at Monash, Professor Thorp was Professor of Finance at the University of Sydney Business School, where she served as inaugural Director of Engaged Research (2017–18) and Associate Dean, Research and Research Education (2019–2023). Previously she was Professor of Finance and Superannuation at UTS.

Prior to her appointment at Monash, Professor Thorp was Professor of Finance at the University of Sydney Business School, where she served as inaugural Director of Engaged Research (2017–18) and Associate Dean, Research and Research Education (2019–2023). Previously she was Professor of Finance and Superannuation at UTS.

Prof Thorp has a PhD in Economics from UNSW and is recognised internationally as a leading authority on financial decision-making. Her research addresses the challenges people face when managing retirement savings, investments, insurance, mortgages, and credit. Prof Thorp has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

Her work appears in leading journals such as Management Science, The Economic Journal, Review of Finance, and the Journal of Banking and Finance.

The quality and influence of Prof Thorp’s research is reflected in invitations to present at the American Economic Association, European Finance Association, Econometrics Society World Congress, Netspar, RAND, and the Boulder Conference on Consumer Financial Decision Making, as well as seminars at Princeton, Cambridge, Mannheim, Stanford, leading Australian universities and peak bodies such as the OECD; and requests for advice from regulators including the US GAO, UK NEST, the Netherlands FCA, and ASIC.
