Empowering Leadership and Personal Growth: A Transformative Experience at Darden Business School

As we step into 2024, we are thrilled to share an inspiring story from Paula Nassif, Special Counsel Commercial at Maddocks as she reflects on a defining moment in her career journey that sparked significant personal growth.

Back in 2022, Paula was honoured to receive the WiBF/Turks Legal “Women in Leadership” Scholarship, marking the beginning of an extraordinary adventure at the Darden Business School, University of Virginia (UVA). This scholarship not only granted her access to the prestigious “Women in Leadership Program” but also served as a catalyst for self-discovery, unveiling invaluable leadership insights and propelling her on a continuous path of personal growth.

However, with the recent upheaval caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, the intention to travel to the USA for the scholarship was deferred. Only recently did Paula have the opportunity to embark on this transformative journey and finally visit the UVA.

The picturesque setting of UVA’s historic grounds in the heart of Virginia, designed by none other than Thomas Jefferson, provided a captivating backdrop for the program. Autumn had painted the campus with vibrant hues of orange, red, and golden yellow, creating a stunning atmosphere that mirrored the rich history and significance of the university.

“The experience extended beyond the classroom, offering a chance to explore Monticello, Jefferson’s home, and immerse myself in the legacy of one of America’s founding fathers,” said Paula.

The Women in Leadership course at Darden was a transformative journey. Focused on expanding leadership skills across various domains, the program utilised real case studies and practical exercises to delve into areas such as organisational leadership, strategy, negotiation, decision-making frameworks, political dynamics, and unique challenges faced by women in leadership roles.

“Personal development exercises, including the Clifton Strengths assessment and the Reflected Best Self Exercise (RBSE), provided invaluable insights into my strengths and leadership style,” shared Paula.

The diverse cohort comprised accomplished women from across the United States, representing organisations like NASA, Freddie Mac, and private equity firms. The connections formed during the program continue to be a source of inspiration and support for Paula, showcasing the power of networking and collaboration.

“Following the program, my journey extended to Atlanta, Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, Palm Springs, San Francisco, and beyond. This global exploration not only enriched my cultural experiences but also served as a reminder of the interconnectedness of leadership and personal growth on a global scale. Thinking back on the impact of the course on my career, I believe the insights gained at Darden have positioned me to be a more effective leader and collaborator. The depth of self-reflection, exposure to diverse perspectives, and the application of unique psychological assessments have equipped me with a profound understanding of my capabilities and how to leverage them for the benefit of both myself and those around me,” reflected Paula.

For those considering a similar path, Paula’s advice is to embrace the unknown, stretch beyond comfort zones, and fearlessly pursue personal and professional goals. Set-backs are not an endpoint but a stepping stone to growth. It is essential to break free from self-imposed limitations, challenge preconceived notions, and remain open to diverse perspectives. The commitment to continuous improvement and the pursuit of dreams is what truly matters.
