Donald Daniel: Leading with Inclusion, Innovation, and Impact

In the ever-evolving world of banking and finance, leadership plays a critical role in shaping the future of the industry. Donald Daniel, the 2024 WiBF Inclusive Leader Award winner, exemplifies the qualities of an innovative and empathetic leader who is not only driving change but also fostering a culture of inclusivity and growth.

As the Learning Delivery Manager for Financial Crime Operations at NAB, Donald has spent over 15 years in frontline roles across personal, commercial, and corporate banking before transitioning into learning and development. His journey is one of passion, purpose, and a deep commitment to empowering those around him.

From Frontline Banking to Learning & Development
Reflecting on his career shift, Donald shares how his early experiences shaped his leadership approach. “I loved working with customers, helping them grow their businesses beyond their dreams,” he explains. “But I also realised I had a passion for developing the people around me.”
This realisation led him to apply for a role in training within the lending function, marking the beginning of a career that aligns with his true passion, coaching, mentoring, and equipping others with the skills they need to succeed.

A Leadership Style Rooted in Inclusion and Empathy
Donald is widely recognised for his inclusive leadership style, one that emphasises understanding his team members on a deeper level. “The first thing I do is really get to know people, what motivates them, what their strengths and weaknesses are,” he says.

His approach focuses on individual development plans, regular one-on-one conversations, and quarterly development days where team members share their knowledge. “I firmly believe that if you align people’s skills and aspirations with organisational goals, you create a culture of success,” he adds.

One of the most talked-about initiatives in his team is the quarterly development day. Despite scepticism about dedicating an entire day to learning, Donald affirms its impact. “We focus on emerging topics like AI and how it can enhance our work rather than replace us. The key message is: AI won’t take our jobs, but those who master AI will have the advantage.”

Diversity, Cultural Awareness, and Global Experience
Donald’s commitment to inclusion extends beyond gender diversity. Having facilitated programs across Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, and Asia, he acknowledges the importance of cultural awareness in leadership.

“When I first started working internationally, I had a very Western-centric perspective,” he admits. “I quickly learned that to be effective, I needed to understand different cultural values, communication styles, and work ethics.”

This realisation has informed his hiring philosophy. “I don’t believe in quotas, but I do believe in balance,” he says. “We ensure diverse perspectives by considering not just gender but different cultural and professional backgrounds.”

Balancing Career and Family
Beyond the workplace, Donald is also a dedicated father and partner. He openly shares the challenges of balancing a demanding career while being present for his family, particularly as his eldest daughter has faced serious health challenges.

“I’ve had to learn that each child needs a different approach,” he reflects. “It’s not about treating them all the same, it’s about giving them what they need to thrive.”
His commitment to shared responsibilities at home is just as strong. “I take on tasks like laundry and housework so my partner has time for her career. Balance isn’t always perfect, but conscious effort makes a difference.”

Lessons in Leadership from an Unlikely Duo
Interestingly, Donald also finds leadership lessons in his two beloved pets, a dog and a cat who were raised together. “They collaborate, they teach each other, and they’ve mastered the art of influencing humans,” he laughs. “It’s a funny but insightful reminder that teamwork and adaptability can come in unexpected ways.”

The Future of Inclusive Workplaces
Looking ahead, Donald believes the key to creating truly inclusive workplaces lies in purpose-driven leadership. “Organisations need to focus on fostering environments where people can be themselves, feel valued, and contribute meaningfully,” he says.

He is also an advocate for removing bias from hiring and decision-making processes. “We need to rethink our policies, technology, and leadership structures to ensure we attract and retain diverse talent.”

A Legacy of Impact
For Donald, success is not measured by titles or accolades but by the impact he leaves on others. Winning the Inclusive Leader Award has reconnected him with former colleagues who have shared how his guidance shaped their careers.

“These ‘Lollipop Moments’, where someone tells you that your small act of support made a big difference, are what I value most,” he says. “If I can help others achieve their goals, create equitable workplaces, and ensure my children enter a workforce that values diversity, then I know I’ve made a meaningful contribution.”

Donald Daniel’s journey is a testament to the power of inclusive leadership, continuous learning, and the profound impact that one individual can have on an entire industry. His story serves as an inspiration for leaders striving to create workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
