Carving a Niche: How Deborah Harbrow is Paving the Way for Future Women Leaders in Private Wealth
28 Jan 2026
As WiBF celebrated its 25th year of championing gender diversity and excellence in 2025, last year’s National Industry Awards shone a spotlight on the extraordinary achievements of women shaping Australia’s banking and finance sector. Among them was Deborah Harbrow from Lipman Burgon & Partners who took home the Achievement in Private Wealth and Superannuation Award. Her reaction on the night? Pure shock. Her impact? Undeniable.
When Deborah’s name was announced she admits she didn’t expect it. “I was genuinely surprised,” she reflects. “The other finalists are such strong, accomplished women. It was an honour just to stand alongside them.” For Deborah, the recognition was more than a personal milestone. It was a moment of visibility for a career built steadily through trust, expertise and a genuine commitment to helping others.

Building a Career Grounded in Trust
Deborah’s journey into private wealth was not driven by a predetermined path but by a series of opportunities built on client relationships and trust. Over time she developed a unique niche: supporting women navigating significant life transitions such as divorce, the loss of a partner or sudden financial independence.
“It wasn’t something I deliberately set out to do,” she explains. “It evolved naturally as clients continued referring other women to me. They trusted me to guide them through complex, often emotional financial decisions. That trust has been the foundation of everything I do.”
Her approach is deeply personal and empathetic. She understands that financial decisions are often intertwined with emotional upheaval and she brings a calm, knowledgeable presence to moments that can otherwise feel overwhelming. This client-first mindset has set her apart and positioned her as a trusted leader in a traditionally male-dominated space.

The Power of Backing Yourself
Deborah’s success is a reminder that forging a fulfilling career often requires confidence and courage. “Back yourself,” she advises other women in the sector. “Find what drives you and don’t be afraid to speak up or take risks. Passion will sustain you and perseverance will move you forward.”
Throughout her career Deborah has had to push past self-doubt and navigate environments where women were often underrepresented. Her ability to define her niche, advocate for her value and deliver consistently for clients has not only advanced her career but created pathways for other women to follow.
Mentoring the Next Generation
Equally important to Deborah as her own growth is her role as a mentor. She believes strongly in both seeking guidance and paying it forward. Early in her career she leaned on internal mentors to help her navigate new challenges and refine her skills. Now she dedicates time to mentoring younger professionals, especially women, who are finding their footing in the industry.
“Mentoring has been a two-way street for me,” she says. “I’ve learned so much from those who came before me and now I‘m learning from the next generation. Their perspectives are fresh and valuable and it’s incredibly rewarding to help them build their confidence and find their place.”
A Legacy of Authenticity and Excellence
Winning the Achievement in Private Wealth and Superannuation Award is a career highlight but Deborah sees it as part of a larger journey defined by authenticity, resilience and making a difference. Her story is proof that leadership does not always look like taking the loudest seat at the table. Sometimes it is about quietly building trust, demonstrating excellence and opening doors for others.
Leaders like Deborah remind us why representation matters. Her win is more than a personal accolade. It is a beacon for future women leaders in private wealth.
